You could try listening to "No Frills Friend" by Amy Allison. It takes a couple of plays to get into it but it's worth it.

The new Cowboy Junkies, their best since Black Eyed Man (in my opinion).

   Wow! Amy Allison!

Good choice! I have all of her albums! (three and a new one on the way)

She's the daughter of Mose Allison (jazz-blues singer songwriter)

I also recommend two young singer songwriters I personally find amazing: Paul Curreri and Devon Sproule - they're both on the small indie label City Salvage Records (based in Brooklyn).

You can hear samples of their songs on CDBaby (http://www.cdbaby.com)

If you really want to dig for something new and cool, check out this band's debut cd (from California) .. Rusted Wagon. I think it's great - and only $6.00 from them direct on their website.

www.rustedwagon.com

great rootsy, alt country with some Wilco-esque stuff too.

D.H.

In reno, nevada, the altcountrykid has an album, "somebody stole my tractor" on barefoot records, available at soundwave cds in reno, nevada, or www.altcountrykid.hippy.com, or e-mail me @ altcountrykid@hotmail.com and ill send you one. There are 10 songs and some samples. It is a fun album. Songs by the altcountrykid, todd snider, robert earl keen, the best is altcountrykids song "camping Naked" I recomend it. It was played on the risky biscut hayseed hoot from chester california, the best altcountry program in the world.

I just got Hem's new piece-o-work and am speechless. It's a bit of a departure from rabbitsongs, and I was a little confused at first, but it's become clear over about compulsive re-listenings (I can't stop!!) that it's one of the most amazing, creative things I've ever heard. Check it out fine people...

I agree, after UUHOP, Steve Earl's "The Revolution Starts...Now"
is in my opinion, the best Alt-Country CD this year.

Mustang Island by Walt Wilkins and yes I agree to Tift Merrit and Tambourine: Imagine Emmylou would sing the song "Laid a Highway"! That song would suit her voice perfectly.

Hotwalker (Tom Russell). I consider Tom's latest CD to be the follow up to his masterpiece "The Man From God Knows Where" and anybody who invested in that CD will want to own this. Tom is a brilliant writer and performer but these two releases don't make for easy listening; more like essential listening for grown ups.

Heard a fine new single from an album by new artist, Miranda Lambert. The new album is 'Kerosene' and the song is 'Me and Charlie Talkin'. It sounded like a hit to me.

Tucson band Creosote released "Blacksmoke" in April (2005). Features the songs and vocals of Jason Steed with a host of great Tucson players, including Joe Burns (Calexico) playing stand-up bass on many of the tracks and killer pedal steel performances by Tim Gallagher (aka Hank Topless - Topless Opry). All recorded at Wavelab in Tucson. You can find it at Miles of Music, Cd Baby or through the website - www.creosotemusic.com

It's not exactly alt. country but I'm very impressed with the debut album from a new London band, The Magic Numbers. The songs are very guitar based with good hooks, great harmonies and even the odd pluck of a banjo.
