Off the top of my head:

Cabaret, Walkabout, Lawrence of Arabia, Little Dorrit (1987 version with Alec Guiness and Derek Jacobi), Schindler's List, Joyeux Noel.

I noticed that nobody mentioned ‘Citizen Kane’ so far, I won’t either. I saw it again last week and once again tried to figure out why it deserved such fawning critical praise. A much better picture, in my opinion, came out a year later, ‘Casablanca’. “Play it Sam. Play it”.

I grew up watching more than a few Saturday afternoon matinees and sometimes American Westerns were offered with old-time stars like Roy Rogers. Maybe that explains why, even now, I collect westerns and have some of his oldies. Other westerns I like include High Noon, Once Upon a Time in the West, and more recent westerns like Open Range, and Dances with Wolves.

Outside the western genre I picked up a couple of pretty decent movie DVDs recently:
Michael Clayton - comes highly recommended as George Clooney does an excellent job with the lead.
There Will Be Blood - highly recommended as I think Daniel Day Lewis is superb.
